VintnersOwn visits Hamilton & Ron Nicholsen Vineyards

Early Veraison

Early Veraison

As mid summer heat begins to come over the Sonoma & Napa valleys a delightful and interesting phenomena called Veraison can be seen transforming wine berries throughout the valleys. This is exactly what VintnersOwn saw on a recent visit to Hamilton & Ron Nicholsen Vineyards, our major Napa cabernet grower. Varaison, a color change and gradual softening of grapes, is an indication that berry growth is becoming berry ripening. Other indications around the vineyard such as even berry spacing between bunches, speak to the quality of care taken throughout the vineyard. A delightful harvest waits indeed!

ReCoop – A toast to toast.

Thursday, July 9th, 2009 | Winemaking
Transporting Glen Lyon barrels to the ReCoop facility in Sebastopol, California

Transporting Glen Lyon barrels to the ReCoop facility in Sebastopol, California. July 3, 2009

As we are sure many of you know much of the complex character of a fine wine comes from its aging in barrel. As wine matures inside oak it is slowly and subtlety oxidized, while picking up flavors from the barrel that enrich the wines complexity and flavor.

For this reason the quality, age and level of toast of a barrel will have a significant effect on your wine…

So how does a new winery introduce the subtlety used oak, while maintaining the highest level of quality? The Vintners Own solution came through a company called ReCoop. By breaking apart slightly used barrels, sourced primarily from our sister winery Glen Lyon, and mixing the staves (wooden states) from new barrels, ReCoop creates a new barrel perfect for imparting the correct level of toast a giving wine.

These mixed new/used barrels offer our winemaker and customers a vast array of toasting options, while ensuring each barrel is of the highest standard of quality.
